Still wishing for work-life balance? Then maybe a read of David Whyte’s recent book, The Three Marriages: Reimagining Work, Self & Relationships, will put things in perspective. Whyte maintains that the current understanding of work-life balance is too simplistic and that it is human to try and set these different parts of our life against one another to achieve ‘happiness’. He offers an alternative approach to integrate and synthesize these 3 marriages: the first and most conventional, to another person; the second, through work; and the third, to ourselves.
So what’s in the cards for this year? I agree wholeheartedly with Whyte, that perhaps we should stop thinking in terms of work-life balance, and start having our 3 marriages converse with one another in a quest for true meaning rather than ease our daily disconcertment with ‘balance’.
